UDL & Curriculum Training: Descriptive Transcript

DESCRIBER:

GRACE:
As they became accustomed to using technology for teaching every student, Concord teachers found themselves planning instruction so that students with complicated disabilities could work on the same subjects and themes as the other students in the classroom. Karen Arnold explains the process.

KAREN:
One thing that our middle school has really taken on is Universal Design for Learning, and this has really been accomplished through a big training effort

from some of our central office people, but our social studies and English and science teachers have really tried to incorporate

the Internet and the Web and other materials into their curriculum.

And they do this in a variety of ways, through Inspiration and making links and hooking on that way.

For some of our students that have severe complicated disabilities, in the past what we would do, in order to help them feel a part and have an active participant role within the classrooms,

is that we would design student-specific tools or curriculum activities that would parallel with the classroom. And what we have found now is that we’re designing our curriculum, we’re designing our activities and our parallel versions and our modified curriculum to be more in line with the curriculum, so that they stay here and they just get chunked in with,
